Quality Courses at Curtin

Following the review of higher education, commonly known as the Bradley Review, a new national body for regulation and quality assurance has been established: the Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA) will oversee strengthened quality assurance arrangements in Australian higher education. It will accredit providers, evaluate the performance of institutions and programs, encourage best practice, de-clutter current regulatory arrangements and provide greater national consistency. Institutions will be required to demonstrate that their graduates have the capabilities that are required for successful engagement in today's complex world. At Curtin, course quality is monitored through the Annual and Comprehensive Course review processes.

Equivalence of Qualifications

The Higher Education Standards Framework (Threshold Standards) 2015 with regards to staffing (Sections 3.2 and 4), is concerned with ensuring that institutions have teaching staff who are appropriately qualified. Higher education students are entitled to expect that they are being taught by someone who is qualified in the particular field of education in which they are studying. The Standards specify that teaching staff must be qualified to at least one AQF level of qualification higher than the course being taught, or if not, that they have the appropriate equivalent relevant academic, professional or practice-based experience and expertise (Ref. Section 3.2.3). In addition, staff supervising doctoral degrees, must have a doctoral degree or equivalent research experience (Ref. Section 4.1 and 4.2).

Determining equivalence of professional experience is more than the time worked in a particular profession and assessment takes into account how a person’s professional experience demonstrates equivalence to the knowledge and skills in the learning outcomes of the required AQF level. The Equivalence of Qualifications Procedures outlines Curtin’s process for determining equivalence, where required, to avoid inconsistent and ad hoc judgements being made when determining equivalent professional experience. Curtin has Guidelines available to assist staff in determining staff have the appropriate qualifications or are adequately supervised in their teaching roles.
