Contract based learning: Is it effective?

The purpose of the current research was to ascertain the effectiveness of contract based learning (CBL) and to consider its merits as an appropriate learning strategy in a university context. The development, implementation and evaluation of a learner focussed approach to the teaching of a first year core unit in the Faculty of Education, Curtin University, Western Australia will be reported. The data was collected through a questionnaire, student journals of andragogy, and interviews. Issues relating to the implementation of CBL and assessment, as well as its effectiveness as a learning strategy, will be discussed.
